The Daily Beast reports that Bannon has recently retained the services of Bill Burck, of the firm Quinn Emanuel, in preparation for cooperating with the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. As Trump aides called him disloyal and disgraceful, the president branded his former chief strategist on Twitter as "Sloppy Steve", an apparent reference to Bannon's often unkempt appearance, and declared that "he lost his mind" when he was pushed out of the White House last August. He also reportedly represents White House Counsel Donald McGahn and former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus in relation to the Russian Federation investigation.

Bannon's spectacular downfall is a significant setback and part of a larger pattern of reversals for Breitbart and the other far-right and fascist-tinged big business forces he represents.

"We all knew Flynn had issues", a senior White House official said at the time.

Bannon attempted to walk back from the remarks, telling the Axios news website that "Donald Trump both a patriot and a good man", but the closest he came to an apology was regretting the timing of his response.

Comey has said the president asked for his loyalty and urged him to let go of the Flynn investigation, and Priebus reportedly has notes backing up those accounts. Many were outraged that Bannon questioned President Trump's mental fitness and disparaged his elder son, Donald Trump Jr., calling his actions "treasonous". "He was not talking about Paul Manafort".

Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon speaks during a campaign event for Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Judge Roy Moore in Fairhope, Alabama, U.S., December 5, 2017. According to a statement from the company's chief executive, Larry Solov, Bannon and Breitbart will work together on a smooth transition. "The President pointed to that and also pointed that Mr Bannon is not in it for the country but instead in it for himself".
