Samsung describes the TV as a scalable product, which can fit nearly any size you can imagine (its technology comes from Samsung's 34-foot cinema display). Key performance qualities of MicroLED displays are their light source lifetime, power consumption, and luminous efficiency (up to 2000 nits).
For once in technology circles, "bezel-less" really means zero bezels, and that is how Samsung makes these modular TVs so configurable and able to extend to larger than life levels.
Samsung's The Wall is the world's first modular MicroLED 146-inch TV.
The 85-inch Q9S 8K TV uses smart AI algorithm to upscale content to 7680 x 4320 resolution.
A variety of 8K TVs also were showcased at CES, including a Samsung QLED 8K TV that uses AI technology to render content in higher resolution than the current top standard, 4K.
Instead, Samsung is keen to stress that it is employing deep learning AI to turn any content into clean, clear 8K visuals. This allows customers to use voice commands to control the TV and integrate with other Samsung devices running Bixby. It will be available globally but will first come to Korea and the United States in the second half of this year.
Samsung also touted the TV's adjustable quality, meaning people can expand (or reduce) the size of their screen by adding or removing modules as their needs change. The 2018 models of Samsung Smart TVs will also offer easier sharing and connectivity, thanks to SmartThings, Samsung's IoT platform hub. If and when it shows up, you'll need a wall space more than 10 feet wide. Another feature, the Universal Guide, will serve as a recommendation service for TV and other content.
2018 TVs obviously improve on that, and they will likely still be better than traditional LCDs and even OLEDs to some extent; they just won't quite be what true QLEDs will bring a few years from now, when the backlight is removed altogether.
