ProFootballTalk first reported the dismissal of Bevell, a former assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers quarterback when UW won the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1994.
Head coach Pete Carroll tried to take the heat for the call, but much of the blame was still put on Bevell's shoulders. Seattle struggled to remain constistent this season, and eventually finished with a 9-7 record - the first time the Seahawks would both finish with less than 10 wins and fail to make the postseason since 2011.
More details are in this ESPN story. But Bevell became an exceedingly unpopular figure among Seahawks fans, especially after Seattle lost Super Bowl XLIX to the New England Patriots on an interception at the goal line, costing them a second straight world championship. "It's not playcalling", Baldwin said, when asked what ailed Seattle's offense.
It's unclear who the Seahawks will turn to as a replacement for Bevell. "We go into a game knowing what the defense is going to give us, the situations we're going to be in".
Bevell, a former quarterback at Wisconsin, came to Seattle following a stint as the OC with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Seahawks led the National Football League in both yards allowed and points allowed in 2014, the year before Richard became the defensive coordinator. The 2012 to 2015 seasons, however, all rank among the top eight in franchise history in terms of points scored. Additionally, he led the Seahawks in rushing with 586 yards and three touchdowns.
However, the last two seasons have seen a slump in the ground game. Cable, who joined Seattle's staff the same year as Bevell, is also not assured of being brought back next season.
