There was more misery for those trying to get through JFK Airport in New York Sunday as a water main break forced the closure of Terminal 4 and took with it 38 gates, majority used for global flights. Maintenance crews were deployed to mop up the west end of the terminal, which saw about three inches of flooding, according to a Port Authority spokesman.
Because of a snowstorm that slammed the NY metropolitan area Thursday, many passengers at JFK and LaGuardia airports remain stranded from canceled or delayed flights.
The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says worldwide arrivals to Terminal 4 have been suspended, with passengers who have already arrived being taken to other terminals for processing.
Terminal 4 is a major hub for global travel at JFK airport.
No worldwide arrival flights were allowed into the terminal Sunday afternoon, but global departures were not affected, the airport tweeted.
But tempers have flared among furious travellers, forced to sleep on the floor of terminals, with others stranded on planes for hours waiting to access a gate and massive delays in baggage claim.
Passengers on Kuwait Airways flight 118 were taken to hotels and alternative routes for them will be planned, NBC New York reports.
The Port Authority said the water pipe break appears to be weather related.
"We're exhausted", he said. The disruption occurred while the U.S. Northeast continued to endure bone-chilling weather with the NY temperature at 17 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 Celsius). It's now 11pm and we've just been told we won't get our baggage tonight. "Passengers are urged to contact their airlines for specific flight information", the airport said on Twitter. It also caused several flight delays.
