Samsung has announced the launch of its latest flagship mobile processor that's expected to power face recognition in the firm's upcoming Galaxy S9 series devices. According to the South Korean giant, the Exynos 9 Series 9810 is company's most innovative mobile processor so far, and it is meant for AI applications and richer multimedia content.
The Exynos 9810 octa-core processor comes with four high-performance big cores running at up to 2.9 GHz and four little cores which has a higher power efficiency. The company claimed that Exynos 9810 offers 100% increase in the single-core performance and 40% increase in the multi-core performance over its predecessor. It will have an additional secure processing unit to safeguard biometric and other personal data such as the iris, face, and fingerprint scans.
Thanks to the neural network-based deep learning and robust security offered by the Exynos 9810, smartphones with this chipset will be able to easily identify people and objects in photos for depth sensing or for quickly performing image search.
The Exynos 9810 is now in mass production, again, because it'll be in the Galaxy S9 internationally.
It has LTE Cat.18 6CA-supported modem that supports up to 6x carrier aggregation (CA) for a maximum download speed of up to 1.2Gbp (Cat.18) and 200 megabits per second (Mbps) uplink.
Fabricated on Samsung's second-generation 10nm FinFET process, the Exynos 9810 chipset features third-generation CPU and faster gigabit LTE modem, along with sophisticated image processing with deep learning-based software.
Samsung's Exynos 9810 SoC sports a 3rd generation custom CPU that Samsung has upgraded with wider pipelines and optimised cache memory. With 10-bit HEVC (high efficiency video coding) and VP9 support, the MFC can render 1,024 different tones for each primary color (red, green and blue). It also features firewalls that isolate internal sub-systems from each other. The chip is likely to be sold in Asia, while USA and European customers will get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip. This "hybrid face detection" feature could be a worrying factor for Samsung's rival Apple, which has filled deep pockets for Face ID feature in iPhone X.
Finally, the Exynos 9810 includes dedicated image processing to enhance stabilization of images and video, as well as UHD video at 120fps.
What makes the new processor even more interesting is that it will come with advanced AI capabilities.
