This is a major disappointment for the Spurs because when healthy, Leonard has become one of the best all-around players in the National Basketball Association.
Kawhi Leonard suffered a sprained ankle in last year's playoffs.
The latest setback represents yet another roadblock for Leonard in his return, as he missed the first 27 games of the season rehabilitating from quadriceps tendinopathy.
Leonard hurt his shoulder during their 103-89 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday and it was originally diagnosed as a left shoulder strain.
The campaign has been filled with injuries for San Antonio but they have rallied and remained competitive regardless of who they have on the floor.
"I don't know", Popovich said when he asked if Leonard would play at some point during their current road trip, via ESPN. "It depends on how his shoulder goes". "It's too bad because he was starting to get back into form a little bit after playing a couple of games". But an offseason quad injury would keep him out this season until December 12th. In fact, the team hasn't even ruled Kawhi out for Thursday's game in LA against the Lakers (the Spurs play a game in Sacramento on Monday, for which Kawhi has also been ruled out). He has missed at least eight games in every season of his career and is averaging just 66.3 games entering this year.
Since then he has been on a minutes restriction and rested regularly since returning, in true Gregg Popovich fashion, but Leonard has been fairly productive (15.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game over just under 23 minutes per game).
