Mumbai (Maharashtra): Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray on Friday assured that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would come down hard on violators in Kamala Mills fire that claimed 14 lives.
The police had on Friday registered a case against the three co-owners of 1 Above. "After demolition, the restaurants, hotels and malls have been warned that they should comply with fire safety norms strictly or face action", said a senior civic official.
Virendra Mishra, deputy commissioner of police zone 3 said, "Since the pubs are located in the Kamala Mills compound where the alleged illegal extension was constructed, its owners have been named in the FIR".
Fire department officials said it is the customers who have to raise questions about such issues. A notice was also served by the BMC regarding the illegal construction.
A 28-year-old girl Khushboo, one of the victims who lost her life in the Kamala Mills fire, in Lower Parel, Mumbai was celebrating her birthday in one of the pubs when the disaster happened.
Designated officer of G-south ward Madhukar Shelar, sub-engineer of the ward Dinesh Mahale, Junior Engineer Dhanraj Shinde, Medical Officer of Health of the ward Dr Satish Badgire, and Assistant Divisional Fire Officer S S Shinde are the five suspended. "That is why the Chief Minister stepped in and said if we find a similar kind of negligence, then officials will be booked too", she said. They must be removed from their place of service immediately, the report says according to the source.
The building, in Central Mumbai, houses some commercial establishments including hotels. There have been allegations that civic authorities ignored construction irregularities and violated safety norms in the compound.
The fire broke out at 1 Above restaurant soon after midnight on Thursday, then spread to other eateries and the next building. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. "Definite action must be taken where it is needed", he added.
