The U.S. military said Tuesday one of its soldiers was killed and four others wounded during a "combat engagement" in eastern Afghanistan. It said two of the wounded were in stable condition and the other two have returned to duty. "Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen and wounded brothers".
"Additional information will be released as it is available", the statement read.
Sen. Cory Booker says the Army had identified the dead soldier as Mihail Golin, of Fort Lee, New Jersey.
While Afghan security forces are conducting most of the fighting against the Taliban and other insurgent groups, United States troops operate alongside them in a training capacity and are frequently on the front lines. "We continue to apply increased military pressure on ISIS-K, forcing their movement from their front-line positions".
More than 8,000 civilians were killed or wounded in conflict-related violence in the first nine months of a year ago, according to data compiled by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. The Washington Post reveals that eleven of those fatalities occurred during combat with seven taking place in the Nangahar province. US officials had hoped by the end of previous year to defeat the group, known as ISIS-Khorasan province, or ISIS-K. Militants in Achin were pushed into mountains that border Pakistan and were attempting to move west from there through access points in the mountains, the general said.
