The United Airlines website indicated that Flight 895 was diverted to Anchorage, and the departure to Hong Kong was cancelled due to "operational difficulties". Airport police told KTVA the man smeared feces inside a couple of bathrooms before taking his shirt off and attempting to stuff it into a toilet. The cleaning process, however, forced each of the flight's passengers to spend the night in Alaska.
As the plane made its unplanned landing in Alaska, the man cooperated with the flight crew and sat in his seat, KTVA reports.
The flight landed in Anchorage about 6:30 p.m. and was met by local and federal law enforcement, police said. The FBI says it is investigating the incident along with airport police. The man was not arrested, but was taken to a nearby hospital to undergo a mental evaluation.
The reason? A passenger defecated all over two of the bathrooms of a Boeing 777, rendering them both useless. No charges were filed.
United Airlines, owned by United Continental Holdings Inc, said there were 245 people on board the plane and said it provided hotel accommodations for its customers.
