Cornerback Richard Sherman #25 of the Seattle Seahawks takes the field for the 2014 NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field on January 19, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. Shead is expected to visit Detroit later this week but he could also re-sign with the Seahawks at any time now that he has been released. Should Hyde not come back, the 49ers would have to replace the 1,288 yards from scrimmage he had in 2017.
The two parties agreed to a three-year incentive laden deal worth up to $39.15 million.
Peters, with an NFL-leading 19 interceptions since 2015, is nearly five years younger than Sherman, who turns 30 at the end of this month.
Before officially confirming the deal, 49ers general manager John Lynch tweeted a picture of him posing with Sherman, a fellow Stanford graduate, as well as Sherman's fiancee Ashley and 49ers chief contract negotiator Paraag Marathe. "We can put this in the end zone!"
We know how the reaction to Richard Sherman joining the 49ers is going in Seattle. "We said to him, 'There are some realities here where you're going to have to give.' And he got it".
"He's such a versatile player, he's played both for us", coach Pete Carroll said last week at the scouting combine.
On Monday morning, Sherman spoke with Bay Area reporters via conference call and elaborated on the many layers involved in the splashiest move of the early offseason. "The way he played down the stretch was inspiring, it was incredible", Sherman said.
The San Francisco 49ers began last season 0-10, but just one deal has already transformed the trajectory of their franchise.
Sherman, who turns 30 on March 30, is a four-time Pro Bowl player and a three-time selection as a first-team All-Pro. Sherman played for Seahawks for seven seasons. He ranks first in the National Football League since 2011 in interceptions (32), passes defensed (99), completion percentage (47.4) and passer rating (50.9).
And while Sherman still has to prove how much he has left in the tank, his reputation around the league will only make the 49ers more attractive to other free agents.
