The minor girl had alleged that she was raped by Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the BJP legislator from Unnao, and his brother a year ago, but the police refused to take any action against them.

Sengar was detained at 4:30 am and taken to the CBI Lucknow office for questioning immediately. But, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his statement said that the MLA has been arrested and even went to the extent of saying that the government has zero tolerance toward crime against women and none would be spared.

Up to six police personnel were suspended for allegedly beating up the victim's father, who died on April 9.

Union minister Smriti Irani said stern action will be taken against those found guilty in the Unnao rape case and condemned any efforts to "politicise" such cases.

The case was later handed over to the CBI. Meanwhile, a CBI team also visited the hotel in Unnao where the victim is housed under police protection to take her statement. The accused was held by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for scrutinising objective on early Friday morning.

Sengar and his brother were also accused of brutally assaulting victim's father, who was fighting to get her daughter justice.

With possibility of arrest of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tonight submitted it's interim probe report to the Uttar Pradesh government. Safipur Circle Officer Kunwar Bahadur Singh, who had allegedly not allowed the victim's complaint against Sengar to be entertained initially, is likely to be questioned.

The CBI has registered three separate cases related to the alleged rape of a woman by a BJP MLA and his brother late in the night, officials said here on Thursday. Since the murder charge was added later by the police, it does not reflect in the CBI FIR. The agency filed three FIRs late on Thursday over the 2017 rape and the victim's father's death in police custody.

Sengar, an MLA from Bangarmau in Unnao district, was not arrested yet, the officials said. According to the post-mortem report, he had suffered serious injuries.
