A week after an inspiring comeback win against Manchester City, Manchester United fell to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford against bottom club West Bromwich Albion on Sunday and manager Jose Mourinho said such inconsistency needed to change if they were to challenge their neighbours next season.
Manchester City have been a cut above the rest all season, and now they are confirmed as the best team in the Premier League.
Asked if he was frustrated because City won the title on the back of United's loss, the Portuguese said, "I have won titles, I would not be happy if someone said I won title because someone lost a match".
City have won the title with four games to spare and 16 points between them and United. "I knew that sooner or later that would be and if I was in that position I would be very upset if someone said they won the title because Manchester United lost", he said.
It's not fair, for them.
Jose Mourinho admits Paul Pogba needs to show much more consistency in his performances and has challenged the midfielder to maintain the form that saw him nearly single-handedly dismantle Manchester City last week.
Thierry Henry: I am not surprised with what Pep has done in this league and previous year, I was one of the people saying stop having a go at the man because that's how he plays. "I believe in myself, but I don't play".
"It's awesome. The first time you win it, you think you'll win all of them". That didn't make me feel super happy and, in my opinion, it affected some of the people that were too happy.
"Hopefully we can celebrate with our fans against Swansea (next weekend) and be champions because they deserve it".
"Then the first time you lose one, you think you're never going to win another ever again", he told Sky Sports.
"The mental level, the day by day, everything must be consistent until the last day so one of the things we have to improve is consistency", he said. I have seen many teams win it as champions for the whole season, and it's the first case for us.
United gifting City the title by losing to West Brom came just a week on from them delaying their rivals' celebrations.
