Shaykh Isgaak Taliep, Secretary-General of the Muslim Judicial Council, called the attack on the mosque a "senseless crime" against three innocent individuals.
Muslims make up about 1.9 percent of South Africa's 55 million population, with most following the Sunni Muslim denomination.
Police, firefighters and several private security companies are on the scene, according to IPSS Medical Rescue's representative Paul Herbst.
