Incumbent Republican Congressman Mark Sanford lost in the SC primary race to challenger Katie Arrington on Tuesday, after President Trump made an election-day social media move to hit out at Sanford and endorse Arrington in the race.
With 98% of the vote counted, U.S. media called the race for state representative Katie Arrington, who led Sanford by 50.5% to 46.5%.
After steering clear of the race for months, Trump, late on Tuesday but hours before polls closed, attacked Sanford by tweet, calling him "very unhelpful".
In South Carolina, former governor Mark Sanford, who rehabilitated his image after a freaky scandal some years to get elected to Congress, was a surprise loser in his primary after President Trump came out against him.
