Trump plans to hold a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore, the latest twist in the high-stakes diplomacy over US attempts to eliminate Pyongyang's nuclear arms program.

A summit meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could take place early September at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, near Russia's borders with China and North Korea.

All the officials who were reportedly promoted were younger than those dismissed, according to Yonhap, including the new general staff chief, Ri Yong Gil, who at 63 is 21 years younger than the outgoing Ri.

North Korean state media had previously said Kim Jong Gak was replaced by Army General Kim Su Gil as the director of the army's General Political Bureau, according to Reuters. 'The president has talked tough when it comes to North Korea, but more important than any tweet, more important than any comment about the size of the big red button, will be the president's willingness to stand strong and secure a strong and enduring deal'.

"The two sides will be negotiating everything from the site of the meeting to which leader sits where at the table, who is allowed in the room with them, the number of meals and breaks, what to use in a toast between the two leaders (given that Mr. Trump does not drink alcohol) [and] what gifts could be exchanged", among other issues, the paper wrote.

Citing an unnamed intelligence official, Yonhap said No Kwang-chol, first vice minister of the Ministry of People's Armed Forces, had replaced Pak Yong-sik as defence chief, while Ri Myong-su was replaced by his deputy, Ri Yong-gil.

Asked about the contents of Kim's letter, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders declined to "get into the specifics of the letter" but added "we feel like things are continuing to move forward and good progress has been made".

"All these guys are Kim Jong Un people", said Michael Madden, a North Korea leadership expert at Johns Hopkins University's 38 North website.

Before making a deal or lifting sanctions on North Korea, the White House must commit to the following five principles, they insist.

Yonhap reported that Kim Yong Chol had transited Beijing on Monday on his way back to Pyongyang from the United States.

"They are shaping these guys up because there is going to be a lot of foreign interaction", Madden said.

The North, meanwhile, has noted possible stumbling blocks for the talks, including denunciations of upcoming military exercises involving the United States and South Korea.
