It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.
Trump is still considering pardoning lifestyle maven Martha Stewart, who was convicted in an insider trading case, and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, serving 14 years on felony corruption charges, along with several others, the White House official said.
Following his meeting with Kardashian last week, Trump tweeted: "Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing". She was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts related to a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation. Johnson apologized for her involvement with drug dealers, but noted that she had only done it out of desperation, and that the law under which she had been sentenced had been changed since her sentencing.
She was sentenced to life in prison in 1997, and appellate judges and the U.S. Supreme Court have rejected her appeals.
Kardashian West personally lobbied Trump and also met with Jared Kushner, a senior adviser to Trump who has spearheaded efforts at sentencing and prison reform for the administration.
"I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon", she wrote.
"I feel like my life is starting over again", an emotional Johnson told reporters outside the prison in Aliceville.
"[Kim Kardashian is] an fantastic person, and I'll be grateful for what she's done".
Kardashian West welcomed Trump's action on Twitter, writing: "BEST NEWS EVER!".
Democrats and Trump critics have warned that the president might be sending a message to his former aides and associates caught up in the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation or the probe of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen by the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office.
At the time, Kardashian West told MIC that Trump "really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice".
Her release was confirmed by Jennifer Turner of the American Civil Liberties Union, who is part of Johnson's legal team.
"I went into a complete panic and out of desperation, I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money", Johnson said.
Last month, Trump posthumously pardoned boxer Jack Johnson. Johnson "has been a model prisoner over the past two decades" White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.
She then took her advocacy for Johnson to the White House on May 30, arriving just after 4:30 p.m. and meeting with Trump and Kushner to advocate on Johnson's behalf. He said that he was considering commuting the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, the former IL senator serving a sentence after his conviction on corruption charges, and giving a pardon to Martha Stewart.
