Afrasiab from Business Dynamics gave a presentation on biodegradable plastic and said that plastic pollution is a grave issue and as a nation, it is high time to adopt value added solutions like use of biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags. "If present trends continue, by 2050", Guterres warned, "our oceans will have more plastic than fish".
"In particular, it is impacting the ocean, which is the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere, " AfDB said. And one out of five plastic bottles is recycled.
"It is estimated that the total volume of all plastics ever produced is about 8.3 billion metric tonnes, of this, about 6.3 billion metric tonnes is now waste-80 per cent of which are in landfills, and in the natural environment" he stated.
"Within this period however, plastic has transformed everything from clothing, cooking, and catering to product design, engineering and retailing", due to its advantage of lasting for a long time, almost all the plastic ever produced, still exist in one form or the other today. He praised India for its growing focus on environmental protection, but also noted while travelling the country he'd seen some of the most scenic places "destroyed by plastic pollution".
India generates about 25,940 tons of plastic and more than 97,000 tons of solid waste per day, according to the country's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
"Signing the declaration is a significant and important step towards reducing the amount of plastic that we produce and helping end plastic pollution".
The institution made the appeal at a walk for the environment to commemorate the 2018 World Environment Day on Tuesday in Lagos.
