Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul on Wednesday, sought to quell criticism that North Korea didn't make any major commitments at the summit in Singapore.
The summit between the two leaders, scheduled for 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday, will be a crucial test of Trump's bet on North Korea: that Kim's desire to end his country's economic strangulation and pariah status can prevail over the dictator's fear of relinquishing his nuclear threat.
"Max Thunder" is an annual "war game" involving dozens of US and South Korean fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft. President (Barack) Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most risky problem.
US President Donald Trump (R) gestures as he meets with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (L) at the start of their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018. The likelihood of Trump launching a first strike against North Korea, thus setting South Korea, where more than 100,000 Americans live and/or work, ablaze and risking a strike against population centers in the US, was similarly low.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived at Osan Air Base south of Seoul from Singapore early Wednesday evening. "Whatever you want. Just stop touching me!'" Corden said on The Late Late Show.
After greeting each other, the two leaders planned to sit for a one-on-one meeting that a USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said could last up to two hours, with only translators joining them. He added, "I am equally confident that they understand there will be in-depth verification".
Setting out the U.S. position before the summit, Pompeo stressed that the Trump administration would only accept complete denuclearisation of the North. "I know a lot about airplanes; it's very expensive".
Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq.
Sebastian Gorka praised President Trump after his summit with Kim Jong Un that went "beyond all expectations". "Doesn't mean you can't do it, but you've got to do it very, very carefully".
But conservatives in South Korea slammed the summit, saying it failed to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
Shi Yinhong, an worldwide relations expert at People's University in Beijing, said Trump's pledge to halt military maneuvers is, from China's perspective, nearly "too good to be true".
President Donald Trump's comment about being touchy feely in a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were mocked by comedians.
Pompeo also sought to counter concerns that North Korea and the US came away from the talks with fundamentally different interpretations. But Lu Chao, an expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China's Shenyang city, says the guarantees are probably "a repeat of previous US statements that it does not seek to overthrow the current regime in North Korea".
"I'm going to leave the content of our discussions between the two parties, but one should heavily discount some things that are written in other places", Pompeo said.
