While I think it's fair to give Leto a shot playing the Joker in a movie that gives him more screen time, I'm a little concerned that focusing on the Joker as the main character will ruin the appeal of the character for many. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is also set to get her own film called Birds of Prey. Justin Kroll of Variety reports that Warner Bros.is looking to make a Joker solo film starring Jared Leto, who previously played the part in 2016's Suicide Squad.
This marked the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and according to Variety, Leto is set to reprise his supervillain role in what could be the first of many films to branch off of the DC Comics' antihero team.
The 30 Seconds To Mars frontman will star and executive produce the solo movie. Update: Deadline says the Phillips Joker movie is still in the works.
It must be noted that we've reported extensively on the creative process over at Warner Bros. when it comes to their DC movies, and- in a nut shell- it's likely this Joker movie is merely an idea that's in development. Additionally, it also tapped Joaquin Phoenix to star in an origin story for The Joker. Of course, none of these actually have firm release dates - the closest is Suicide Squad 2 being released sometime in 2019 - so which ones happen is anyone's guess, and it's not clear whether Warner Bros. themselves even know at this point, but hey, maybe Joker will even fight Batman in one of them.
However, the studio emphasized that this did not mean the end for Jared's version as this film will fall under a new banner separate from the current cinematic DC universe. Many of these performances, like those by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, are the stuff of acting legend, but then you get Jared Leto's unusual take on the character which can perhaps only be described as divisive.
