Many speak highly of Wheeler and his distinct qualifications for the job, but the media is already attacking him in much the same relentless fashion it did Pruitt, who spoke of it in his resignation letter.
The only way to really turn the page on the Pruitt era will be for Trump to appoint an EPA Administrator who is committed to environmental stewardship, and willing to clean house and wrest control of the EPA back from polluters and lobbyists.
President Donald Trump shakes hands with EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt after announcing his decision for the United States to pull out of the Paris climate agreement in the Rose Garden at the White House June 1, 2017 in Washington, DC.
And then Committee Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY.), who ad agreed to have Pruitt appear before his committee in August, weighed in.
Pruitt resigned Thursday following months of ethical scandals that prompted more than a dozen federal investigations into his leadership at EPA.
His job had been in jeopardy since it emerged he had leased a property previous year that was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist, whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from the EPA.
Some of the ethics accusations involved jobs for Pruitt's wife. The reason Pruitt persisted so long is the same reason why his environmentalist foes shouldn't break out the organic Champagne: The administrator was doing exactly what his boss wanted.
Trump had expressed confidence in Pruitt several times in recent months, although he did say at one point that the EPA chief was not "blameless" for the scandals swirling around him.
Mr. Pruitt had been seen Wednesday at the White House celebrating Independence Day at an annual picnic for military families at the president's invitation.
"It's about time time", Schwarzenegger said. Two days later, he was gone. Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin departed in March after the agency's inspector-general said he improperly accepted a gift of Wimbledon tickets and brought his wife along on a working trip to Europe.
