US President Donald Trump today criticised North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states' military spending and said it benefits Europe more than America, setting the stage for a potentially-acrimonious summit with leaders of the alliance.

Seated across the table from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump vented about Germany for not meeting a 2 per cent spending commitment on defense.

"Germany as far as I'm concerned is captive to Russian Federation because it's getting so much of its energy from Russian Federation", he said.

"So we're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very in inappropriate", Trump said.

"We're supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia", Trump said.

He has repeatedly urged NATO European members to increase their defense spending.

The EU president said he hoped Trump would remember Europe's strong relationship with the United States as he meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in the coming days.

USA president Donald Trump repeatedly complained of European allies not spending enough on defense. However, he's anxious about the president demeaning America's allies and praising its adversaries. Jeff Flake, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, said he is concerned about what Trump might promise Russian President Vladimir Putin when the two meet this month.

The NATO report estimates that only five out of the 29 nations will meet the spending standards that were agreed upon at the 2014 NATO summit in Wales. "But we will work it out, and all countries will be happy", Trump said.

The US president has been openly critical of many of NATO's practices, often railing against Washington spending more money on defence than other member states. "Who would think?" Trump said.

"US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than EU".

"People like to say, 'Oh, Crimea, ' but the fact is they built bridges to Crimea, they just opened a big bridge that was started years ago".
