In December, the Thomas fire, the largest wildfire on record in California, ripped through Montecito, Carpinteria and other coastal cities, destroying several homes.
Officials said Saturday that the fire was only 5 percent contained and "there is a high potential for spread" into the Klamath and Rogue River-Siskiyou national forests and Jackson County, as well as private timberlands.
The flames forced more than 2,000 people to flee their homes, and left thousands more without power, prompting the emergency declaration which frees additional funds for the firefighting effort. Plenty of brush fires have sprung up just this week in Western Washington along highways and in more rural areas in the eastern part of our state. The fire has already destroyed 40 structures and killed one person.
Another six responders are fighting the Klamathon Fire in Siskiyou County in Northern California.
A fire official says a person has died in a fast-moving blaze near the California-Oregon border.
Also near San Diego, firefighters were battling the 10-acre Building Fire.
And in central Colorado's Park County, crews encircled a third of a spotty fire that forced the Buffalo Creek Wilderness to close. The fire has the potential to spread into the Klamath National Forest, Siskiyou National Forest and private timber lands, Cal Fire said Saturday. Traveling at speeds of almost 600 miles per hour, it can reach any fire in the state within 30 minutes.
Rain helped a fire in the heart of ski country that has destroyed three houses, including the home of a volunteer firefighter battling the flames near the resort town of Aspen.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, Huerfano County officials said Highway 160 had reopened and residents of Tres Valles could return home.
