Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in NY. She is a Democratic socialist named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
"Not only would Ocasio-Cortez be a groundbreaker, but she ran on a heavily progressive platform that was really popular: free healthcare, free college education, a federal jobs guarantee, and she wants to abolish ICE", Noah said.
"I do think that we do need to elect a generation of new people to Congress in both parties", Ocasio-Cortez replied.
"I was born in a place where your zip code determined your destiny", the political newcomer said in her viral campaign video.
During her campaign, she criticised Mr Crowley on his ties to Wall Street and accused him of being out of touch with his increasingly diverse constituents.
She continued: "You have given this country hope, you have given this country proof that when you knock on your neighbor's door, when you come to them with love, when you let them know that no matter your stance, you are there for them-we can make change".
To his credit, Crowley was endorsed by a slew of elected officials and trade unions as well as liberal and progressive organizations such as Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, NARAL, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, and the Working Families Party of NY. This time a year ago, she was working as a bartender in the Bronx.
Ocasio-Cortez also called for the impeachment of President Trump and abolition of ICE.
She beat Rep. Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, who had gone unopposed in Democratic primaries for more than a decade. "We must again invest in the development, manufacturing, deployment, and distribution of energy, but this time green energy".
Bunkeddeko, meanwhile, has honed in on the fact that Clarke has not sponsored any legislation that has passed the House in the dozen years since she took office, telling Politico, "Honestly, with Rep. Clarke's zero track record of passing bills, it's hard to tell what she believes".
Her victory earned applause from Bernie Sanders, who said: "She took on the entire local Democratic establishment in her district and won a very strong victory". That is a big one that nobody saw happening.
"I think that the election of Donald Trump was a real game changer and I think we can throw out the old playbook", Nixon said Wednesday. I mean, every district is different. "We must unite, get engaged, and speak loudly with one, unified voice of freedom". Cedric Richmond, the Louisiana Democrat who heads the Congressional Black Caucus, says the focus for all Democrats needs to be on winning at least 218 House seats in November, enough to win back control of the House.
