While audio and video content continues to grow in volume online, text-based web pages still account for the bigger chunk of the web.
The company, noting that the number of Indian language users on the web is expected to reach 500 million in the next two years, revealed a slew of products that are already or will soon be receiving support for new languages.
Navlekha will not just allow publishers in India to go online even with content in Indian languages, but will also help over 1 lakh offline publishers to have a presence on the interwebs.
Aside from Hindi and English, the tech giant has plans of introducing eight new languages to Google Search and Google Assistant starting with Marathi.
Google on Tuesday announced its decision to re-launch its payments app Google Tez as Google Pay. The user can then decide how much he/she wishes to borrow and the duration in which they wish to repay the loan. Under the hood Google Pay uses ultrasonic waves to create one-time code for digital payment.
Google is also working on integrating Google Pay in India with various service providers. Google Maps Go now brings turn-by-turn navigation functionality, while incorporating a brand new home screen with handy shortcuts. With these features, the lighter Maps Go version will become more useful for low-end Android phone users and Google claims to offer a good experience on slower 2G internet speeds as well.
The U.S. search giant is teaming with HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and Federal Bank Ltd.to offer instant, pre-approved loans to customers "right within Google Pay in a matter of seconds", it said in a statement. Google has been testing out some of these features with merchants in Bangalore and Delhi, who run popular salons, kirana stores, and restaurants.
Caesar Sengupta, vice-president, Next Billion Users initiative and Payments, at Google, said when Google builds for India, it builds for the world. To enhance its consumer experience, Google has partnered with RedBus that will help the user get better public transport information like upcoming stops and alerts on Maps application.
Further, Google said it had now integrated Marathi language, in addition to English and Hindi, with the Google Assistant.
