The changes are among the most drastic made to the program in recent years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy's board of governors came together on Tuesday to figure out how they can add some pep to their golden-glazed step for a culture that changes rapidly by the hour.

Starting with the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, a new Oscar will be awarded for achievement in popular film.

The addition of a popular film category caused the most chatter Wednesday morning, as a clear effort to attract a larger audience by honoring bigger and more seen films. It also clocked it at almost 4 hours, making it the longest show in over a decade.

The new date moves up the awards - typically held on the last Sunday in February (or first Sunday in March when accommodating for the Winter Olympics) - to February 9, 2020.

The statement reads: "To honour all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined)". Further details and eligibility requirements are yet to be announced, but the category is expected to cater to more blockbuster and genre films, often seen as maligned by awards ceremonies. However, these winners will still be televised later in the broadcast, in the form of montage videos that will air later in the evening. The 2019 show will still run on Sunday, Feb. 24. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. This creates ratings woes for the Academy, to be sure, but it's also generated an outcry from genre fans and critics, who argue that legitimately great artistic achievements in blockbuster and genre-heavy films are often overlooked, with a few exceptions like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and this year's big victor, The Shape of Water.

"Here's the ten highest-grossing films, when accounting for inflation aka America's most "popular" films," Palotta wrote. The dirty (not so) secret of the Academy Awards is that they've never really been a benchmark of excellence to begin with.

In 1929 at the first Oscars ceremony, the Academy awarded films in two separate categories - Outstanding Picture and Unique And Artistic Picture - both considered the top awards of the night.
