Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer knew about domestic abuse allegations against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith in 2015, reports college football insider Brett McMurphy.

"The university is conducting an investigation into these allegations".

"We are focused on supporting our players and on getting to the truth as expeditiously as possible", the university said.

At last week's Big Ten media days, Meyer claimed to know nothing about the 2015 allegation against Zach Smith. Ohio State begins practice Friday and opens the season September 1 against Oregon State. "So Shelley and I actually both got involved with the relationship with that family, and provided counseling, and wanted to help them moving forward". At issue is whether Urban Meyer knew of the incident before last week-and the extent of what he knew, if he did-and whether he failed to report an allegation that he would be required by Ohio State to report.

Zach Smith in May was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass following a dispute with Courtney Smith.

Courtney Smith told McMurphy that in 2015, Smith "took me and shoved me up against the wall, with his hands around my neck".

Meyer termed firing Zach Smith, which happened July 23, as a "very tough call". Smith has never been convicted of domestic violence, though he was arrested in 2009 for aggravated battery on a pregnant victim following a fight with Courtney.

A text exchange in November 2015 between Courtney Smith and Lindsey Voltolini, the wife of Ohio State staffer Brian Voltolini, revealed that Urban Meyer had talked to Zach Smith about the alleged incidents. The story was also discussed on TV on The Dan Le Batard Show (simulcast on ESPNEWS), and then again on that channel, but in problematic fashion. Charges were never filed. One was Earle Bruce, a former Ohio State coach and Zach Smith's grandfather.

Two weeks after the October 25, 2015 incident, a November 5, 2015 text exchange between Lindsey Voltolini and Courtney shows Meyer talked to Zach Smith about the incident.

Courtney Smith told Stadium, a sports network, that she told Meyer's wife in 2015 about the alleged domestic violence.

No reasonable person can now conclude that Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer did anything but lie through his teeth about not knowing that a Buckeyes assistant coach brutally attacked his wife in 2015. Smith's attorney allegedly had the divorce documents sealed without Courtney's consent, but they were unsealed and released Wednesday morning. David Pollack said he does not believe Meyer will be at Ohio State any longer. "I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there", Meyer claimed at Big Ten Media Days.
