But he says they want Guyger "to be treated like every other citizen, and where there is evidence that they've committed a crime, that there's a warrant to be issued and an arrest to be made".
Allison, who has held government posts in St. Lucia, where she lives and where her son grew up, said her son's death 'just feels like a nightmare'.
The Texas Rangers will take the appropriate time to review the vast amount of evidence and information secured by Dallas Police Department investigators.
Therefore, we have ceased handling it under our normal officer involved shooting protocol, a blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol, we are in the process of obtaining a warrant, and we have also invited the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation. "I have to believe based on experience that her decision to use deadly force in the way that she did was influenced by the fact that she was standing in front of a black male and that our society has allowed law enforcement to use deadly force in unnecessary situations against black men with impunity", he said.
"The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham Jean, who has meant so very much to us".
Brandt Jean answered the phone at home in St. Lucia when his mother called and asked to speak to his father alone. The shooting comes at a time of a national debate over the shooting of unarmed black men by police officers.
Harding University President Bruce McLarty shared his favorite memory of Jean with students in chapel Friday morning. She said she then heard what sounded like "running steps" and a female voice calling the police. Allison Jean said Friday.
In St Lucia, government leaders said the death of Botham Jean came as a "shock" and that embassy officials in the USA would provide assistance to the victim's family. "Regardless of the circumstances, this is a tragedy on both sides", she said. She is pictured in the photo with the victim.
Though still thin on details, the shooting has raised questions about race and prompted calls for policing reform. They described Jean as a devout Christian and a talented singer.
"I think that's what the family would say".
