Serie A: Roma vs Genoa – probable line-ups https://football-italia.net/serie-a-roma-vs-genoa-probable-line-ups/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-roma-vs-genoa-probable-line-ups/#respond Sun, 19 May 2024 07:59:58 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=808903

Daniele De Rossi has a decision to make relating to Paulo Dybala when Roma host Genoa in Serie A on Sunday evening.

‘La Joya’ is in line to return to the Giallorossi matchday squad, but De Rossi could still opt to go with Tomasso Baldanzi over Dybala for precautionary reasons.

Zeki Celik is tipped to return at right-back in what otherwise looks to be a fairly similar team to the one that lost 2-1 to Atalanta in the league last weekend.

For Genoa, there are predictions that Tottenham loaner and former Nottingham Forest right-back Djed Spence is due for a rare start. Aaron Martin is expected to keep his usual spot on the opposite flank.

Genoa will be spearheaded by the impressive partnership of Albert Gudmundsson and Mateo Retegui in attack.

Kick-off is set for 19.45 BST.

Roma vs Genoa – probable line-ups

Roma (4-3-3): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka, Angelino; Cristante, Parades, Pellegrino; Baldanzi, Lukaku, El Shaarawy.

Genoa (3-5-2): Martinez; Vogliacco, de Winter, Vasquez; Spence, Frendrup, Badelj, Strootman, Martin; Retegui, Gudmundsson.

De Rossi: ‘New contract very close, Roma want to spend well’ https://football-italia.net/de-rossi-new-contract-roma/ https://football-italia.net/de-rossi-new-contract-roma/#respond Sat, 18 May 2024 13:59:26 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=808752

Daniele De Rossi opened up about Roma’s ambitions in the summer transfer window and confirmed a new long-term contract was ‘very close’ ahead of the Serie A clash with Genoa.

The Giallorossi haven’t been able to invest too heavily in the transfer market over the last few years due to a tight Financial Fair Play settlement with UEFA but are now looking able to spend more in the summer, especially if they manage to secure a spot in the Champions League.

In the meantime, Roma have been working on setting up a new long-term contract for De Rossi, who only signed a six-month deal when he took over from Jose Mourinho back in January. He has impressed in the dugout, averaging 1.94 points per match across his 16 league games in charge.

De Rossi press conference

Speaking in a press conference via Voce Giallorossi, De Rossi first discussed Paulo Dybala’s condition and Roma’s summer plans.

“He’s been out for a couple of weeks, we need to understand his conditions today and we’ll see. With FFP everyone is influenced by income, for now we haven’t talked about the budget, but we want to spend well and not necessarily a lot.

“There are many teams with an interesting style who don’t spend crazy amounts.”

The Giallorossi coach commented on the importance of the coming match with Genoa.

“It will be full of many exciting things, we have an important objective to achieve, they play well but are without motivation. Everything is nice, but we have to win. Gila surprises me, he is special, tactical, I didn’t think he would become so good as a coach.

“A lot of training and now Genoa are one of the best. I’ll be happy to see him again, he’s a good guy. On Kevin, it will be a pleasure for those who have honoured the Roma shirt and for football to be saluted with dignity.”

De Rossi was asked about the status of his contract and if Romelu Lukaku would leave in the summer.

“We’re not waiting for anyone, we’re chatting and that’s the last thing on my mind. The agreement arrived in 10 minutes, but everything must be seen by the lawyers, but it’s not a problem, it’s very close. We were the masters of our destiny, but there were still a lot of tough games.

“We didn’t talk about any players, but we made evaluations on what we’ve done in past years. Maybe it’s better to improve our players and create an asset that gives you consistency, but it’s still early to say who will put the pieces in place, but there’s not much left.”

He touched on the recent frustrations with Gian Piero Gasperini regarding Atalanta’s scheduling.

“Too much time has passed, we talked and clarified it. There were some ideas of mutual respect, these are controversies that are created here.

“We didn’t have doubts about Atalanta, but in general. We have a clear conscience, we had some doubts on the post-season recovery but it didn’t last long. There’s no need to do favours, we complimented our opponents.”

De Rossi was asked if any Roma players were considered unsellable.

“Yes, but I’m not saying who because it wouldn’t be right. Some unsellable players could leave and vice versa others could stay, and I’ll have to make them perform at their best. Everything is still early.”

De Rossi spoke about his expectations for the transfer window.

“Now I’m here, before Mourinho and Fonseca. Everyone has their own way of making the transfer market, but the constant is that we have always finished sixth or seventh.

“Something needs to change, a strong coach must impose himself to get whoever he wants and a strong club must satisfy them. The first requirement will be hunger, they must feel like it’s the best thing that has ever happened to them.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with top players or young players, we need people who have fire… Pjanic went to Juve insulted but at Roma he went to 2000. Making them hungry and making them perform on the pitch is up to me. We need hunger and for them to be strong on the pitch.”

Finally, De Rossi discussed if any parts of his squad in particular need work.

“Yes, but I won’t say which. I won’t go into detail, we have a match. Yesterday I was here for 11 and a half hours, I can’t think about it too much. There will be people who will help me make the squad as strong as possible.

“Yes. I read that I asked, I called… it never happened. I found some names that I liked, but not more than this, both out of respect for the players and for the two games left to win.”

Strootman: ‘Gudmundsson can be world class like Salah’ https://football-italia.net/strootman-gudmundsson-world-class-like-salah/ https://football-italia.net/strootman-gudmundsson-world-class-like-salah/#respond Fri, 17 May 2024 18:32:25 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=808641

Kevin Strootman believes his Genoa teammate Albert Gudmundsson shows the same kind of promise he saw in Mohamed Salah at Roma. ‘He can make the same leap.’

The Dutch midfielder was in the same Roma squad as Salah before the transfer to Liverpool and not everyone was confident that the Egyptian could take the step up to become world class.

“I said that Salah didn’t always score goals at Roma, despite being clear on goal four or five times per game,” Strootman told Radio TV Serie A.

“So others noted that if he did score every time he was clear, then he’d be at Real Madrid or Liverpool rather than Roma. And that’s where he ended up.”

Now Iceland international Gudmundsson is linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Inter, Juventus and Milan, following a great debut Serie A campaign at Genoa.

“If Gud can make the same leap, I think he can do well at a super top club. He must do it to become a world class player, because his quality is already beyond doubt. He is a serious professional and I am sure he’ll do even better over the next few years.”

Debut Gudmundsson season in Serie A

Gudmundsson turns 27 next month and contributed 14 goals and three assists in 33 Serie A appearances for Genoa this season.

He also helped to secure their promotion from Serie B last term, arriving in January from AZ Alkmaar at a cost of just €1.5m.

Gudmundsson’s value on the transfer market is now closer to €45m, with offers already rejected from Fiorentina mid-season.

Lukaku ready for last dance in Rome ahead of Chelsea return https://football-italia.net/lukaku-last-dance-roma-chelsea/ https://football-italia.net/lukaku-last-dance-roma-chelsea/#respond Thu, 16 May 2024 10:02:30 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=808394

Romelu Lukaku will play out his last match with Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on the weekend as he prepares to return to Chelsea this summer.

The 31-year-old Belgian striker joined the Giallorossi on a circa €6m loan deal from the Blues last summer, a deal that doesn’t contain a permanence clause. As such, he’ll certainly return to West London ahead of the 2024-25 pre-season.

Lukaku has experienced a number of ups and downs during his year with Roma, looking far more prolific under Jose Mourinho than his successor Daniele De Rossi. He’s netted 20 goals and provided four assists in 46 matches across all competitions.

Last Olimpico dance for Lukaku

As highlighted by Il Messaggero via TMW, Lukaku is gearing up for Roma’s final home match of the 2023-24 season against Genoa on Sunday, giving him the chance to say goodbye to the fans at the Stadio Olimpico ahead of his return to Chelsea in the summer.

Considering that his year on loan with the Giallorossi cost the club around €18m total between fees and wages, a stay looks extremely unlikely, forcing the Blues to find a new club for the Belgian in the summer.

Gudmundsson: Latest updates as Inter, Juventus and Tottenham make their moves https://football-italia.net/gudmundsson-inter-juve-tottenham-latest-news/ https://football-italia.net/gudmundsson-inter-juve-tottenham-latest-news/#respond Wed, 15 May 2024 08:27:43 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=808067

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter will soon send an offer for Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson, while Tuttosport claims Juventus are in advanced talks with the striker’s entourage and Tottenham inquired about the 26-year-old a few weeks ago.

Genoa striker Gudmundsson will be one of the hottest commodities in the summer transfer window, and Wednesday’s sports papers in Italy report the latest updates on the Iceland international’s future.

According to Gazzetta, Inter are ready to submit an offer, but the Serie A champions must wait for President Steven Zhang to announce a new agreement for a bridge loan with PIMCO and find new clubs for Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa, who are no longer part of their project.

Gudmundsson: Latest updates as Inter, Juventus and Tottenham make their moves

Inter’s idea is to use the ‘Frattesi formula’ to get Gudmundsson, so a loan deal with an obligation to buy and some players included in the agreement.

Genoa’s asking price is around €35m, a fee the Nerazzurri intend to lower by including some footballers Genoa like, such as Mattia Zanotti, currently on loan at FC St. Gallen and Martin Satriano.

As per Tuttosport on page 10, this is precisely the same formula Juventus want to adopt. The report claims Bianconeri director Cristiano Giuntoli is on good terms with Genoa and the striker’s representatives, the Giuffrida brothers.

Genoa have been following Fabio Miretti, Enzo Barrenechea and Tommaso Barbieri who is currently on loan at Pisa and one or more of these players could be included in the deal alongside a cash offer.

Tuttosport confirms Tottenham and Napoli‘s interest in Gudmundsson but claims Spurs only enquired about the striker a few weeks ago. The Turin-based paper reports that Juventus are currently leading the race to sign the Iceland international.

Napoli battle Inter, Juventus and Tottenham for Gudmundsson https://football-italia.net/napoli-battle-inter-and-juventus-gudmundsson/ https://football-italia.net/napoli-battle-inter-and-juventus-gudmundsson/#respond Tue, 14 May 2024 04:30:00 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=807927

Napoli are battling Inter, Juventus and Tottenham for Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson, claim Sky Sport Italia, as the bidding war hots up.

The Iceland international has been a sensation in his debut Serie A season, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists in 33 games.

He was purchased from AZ Alkmaar for just €1.5m in January 2022 and helped the Grifone to first promotion, then mid-table comfort.

Napoli step up for Gudmundsson

Inter had been the favourites to sign him this summer, but now Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Napoli are diving in with an offer.

They hope to anticipate the others and stave off competition, although they are not helped by the uncertainty over their new coach and possibly missing out on European qualification.

Juventus can afford to make a bid now they have guaranteed a place in the Champions League, with Di Marzio suggesting they will include midfielders Fabio Miretti and Enzo Barrenechea in the deal to lower the cost of the operation.

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are among the Premier League clubs linked with Gudmundsson.

{live, 21:38, FT: Atalanta 2-1 Roma}

Atalanta go 5th, Juventus and Bologna are in the Champions League!

{live, 21:37, Koopmeiners, HOW?!?}

Noooo! Incredible. Pellegrini and El Shaarawy down hurt, Atalanta play on, Lookman sets up Koopmeiners, who fires over an open goal! Ridiculous!

{live, 21:36, Angelino crucial}

Atalanta on the counter, Angelino cuts across to stop Toure.

{live, 21:34, Atalanta wide again}

The finishing has been so bad, Miranchuk saw Lookman on the counter, instead drilled wide! Into 4 minutes of stoppages.

{live, 21:33, Koopmeiners wide}

Koopmeiners low angled drive skims the woodwork from the edge of the box!

{live, 21:32, Atalanta sub}

Miranchuk replaces Ederson. Lots of plans changing here. Lukaku was meant to come off, then switched to Kristensen, Toloi was ready, then Miranchuk chosen instead.

{live, 21:31, Save on Ederson}

Ederson breaks down the right, stings Svilar’s gloves at the near post, the move continues and Lookman fires over!

{live, 21:30, Roma subs}

Azmoun and Joao Costa on, Kristensen and Cristante off. Roma all-attack now.

{live, 21:28, Atalanta counter}

Zappacosta on the counter, tries to pull back from the by-line, but Kristensen with the crucial block.

{live, 21:26, Save on Lukaku}

Great work from El Shaarawy, who battles his way through two tackles, finds Abraham, roll across for Lukaku and angled drive well smothered by Carnesecchi.

{live, 21:25, Roma push}

Lukaku turns Hien down the left, rolls across for Bove, who flicks it on, but only as far as Carnesecchi.

{live, 21:25, Atalanta a bit imprecise now}

Some passes a little overhit, moves not quite coming off as smoothly as they did in the first hour.

{live, 21:21, Carnesecchi save!}

Big chance for Roma to equalise! Angelino down the left, roll across for Pellegrini, sweeps from the edge of the box and Carnesecchi flies to palm it away!

{live, 21:19, Atalanta sub}

Scalvini on, Pasalic off, so De Roon returns to midfield.

{live, 21:17, Cheeky Pellegrini}

Pellegrini hooks it back over his head and Carnesecchi plucks out from under the bar.

{live, 21:17, Roma threaten}

Bove slide-rule pass to Abraham, pulls it back across, intercepted by Hien.

{live, 21:16, Atalanta appeals}

Gasperini, who was booked over the Roma penalty, is fuming that Toure goes down under pressure from Mancini and is not awarded a spot-kick either.

{live, 21:13, Roma revitalised}

Suddenly, Roma starting to believe. We’ve seen this before from Atalanta, when they are so dominant and don’t make it count, they can be vulnerable.

{live, 21:09, Atalanta 2-1 Roma: Lorenzo Pellegrini penalty!}

Carnesecchi got the right angle, but couldn’t reach it.

{live, 21:08, Penalty for Roma!}

Hmm. Abraham and Lukaku combine, Abraham gets the shot away and De Roon sliding in crashes into the Englishman at the end of the move. Arguably, the contact came after it was possible to affect the play…

{live, 21:06, Svilar save}

Atalanta are swarming like a hive of angry bees. After a long, LONG, passing move, Djimsiti sets up Pasalic, Svilar has to palm it over the bar.

{live, 21:04, Atalanta again}

Lukaku misplaced pass to Pellegrini intercepted, De Roon repeats the Lookman shot, also inches wide!

{live, 21:03, Lookman so close!}

Oooh! Lookman from the edge of the box, drills INCHES wide with Svilar only able to watch it go by!

{live, 21:02, Koopmeiners booked}

He will be suspended against Lecce. Not sure he minds that too much.

{live, 21:01, Atalanta subs}

Lookman, Zappacosta and Toure on, De Ketelaere, Ruggeri and Scamacca off

{live, 20:58, Roma shot on target}

That might be the first… Bove snapshot from distance, straight at Carnesecchi.

{live, 20:56, Ederson chance}

Another Scamacca back-heel flick sets up Ederson, scuffed finish into the arms of Svilar. Then Scamacca controls and blasts wide from the edge of the box, because Atalanta won it back that quickly…

{live, 20:54, Scamacca over}

Koopmeiners frustrated he overhit the pass for Pasalic, the move continues, Scamacca nods over at the back post, then gets into an argument with Hateboer, who wanted the header instead.

{live, 20:53, Reminder}

If Roma do not win tonight, then Bologna and Juventus will automatically be qualified for the Champions League.

{live, 20:49, Ndicka booked}

Ndicka into the book for scything into De Ketelaere.

{live, 20:49, 2nd half kicks off: Atalanta 2-0 Roma}

{live, 20:47, Roma subs}

Abraham and Bove on, Baldanzi and Paredes off.

{live, 20:44, Dominant Atalanta}

{live, 20:33, Half-Time: Atalanta 2-0 Roma}

And Roma can count themselves lucky it’s only 2-0, because CDK brace, then CDK and Koopmeiners hit the woodwork.

{live, 20:32, Pasalic wide!}

Another moment of CDK magic, gathered with his back to goal, turned a defender as if he wasn’t even there and sent Pasalic through, curler wide of the target!

{live, 20:29, Koopmeiners off the upright!}

Roma hanging on here, Koopmeiners free kick over the wall, thumps the same upright that De Ketelaere hit!

{live, 20:28, Atalanta free kick}

Such great moves, Scamacca flicked header in midfield to Koopmeiners, he returns it, back-heel flick and De Ketelaere brought down by Cristante just outside the D.

{live, 20:27, Whoops}

Referee gets in the way of a Koopmeiners cross.

{live, 20:24, Big save on Hateboer}

Atalanta cross from the left, Hateboer header deflected and great Svilar save on the line!

{live, 20:23, De Ketelaere again}

Did that hit the upright or Svilar? Either way, he nearly scored from the tightest of angles! Replay shows it hit the post!

{live, 20:22, Almost 3-0!}

De Ketelaere AGAIN, Scamacca wins it back in midfield, leaves it to CDK, who drills just wide!

{live, 20:19, Atalanta swarming}

Lovely CDK pass off the outside of the boot to roll across from the right, then series of shots charged down, the best from Koopmeiners.

{live, 20:18, Baldanzi tries}

Baldanzi tries to surge forward, finds himself immediately surrounded by Atalanta bodies.

{live, 20:16, Problem in the stands}

Play halted for a moment, as fireworks thrown land on the pitch and need to be cleared.

{live, 20:12, All Atalanta}

De Ketelaere looks like he’s playing in a different dimension, Roma are nowhere near him. Waltzes into the defence, rolls across for Pasalic, intercepted by Ndicka.

{live, 20:10, Roma on the ropes}

CDK looking for his hat-trick, blocked off, cross cleared with difficulty.

{live, 20:08, First goal}

{live, 20:08, Roma respond}

Angelino cross, El Shaarawy tries to volley it, but should’ve taken a touch instead.

{live, 20:06, Atalanta 2-0 Roma: Charles De Ketelaere!}

Incredible! Hien robs Lukaku in midfield, Koopmeiners down the left, give and go with Scamacca, pull back for CDK to sweep home relatively undisturbed from 12 yards!

{live, 20:03, Atalanta 1-0 Roma: Charles De Ketelaere!}

That’s a fine solo goal. CDK runs onto the through ball down the left, cuts inside Mancini and bends a right-foot finish into the far bottom corner!

{live, 20:03, Hien intercepts}

Kristensen rolls across from the right for Lukaku, but Hien intercepts.

{live, 20:01, Roma have got a foothold}

Atalanta were pouring forward, but Roma have got a foothold in the game now and trying to slow the tempo.

{live, 19:55, It’s wide open}

As expected, really. Both teams going for it.

{live, 19:51, Roma chance}

Lukaku lays it off for Angelino, shot charged down by Hateboer for a corner.

{live, 18:55, Salernitana subs}

Pasalidis and Pellegrino on, Sambia and Zanoli off.

{live, 18:53, Miretti off the bar!}

{live, 18:51, Just pointing out}

It is the 87th minute. Juventus 0-1 Salernitana.

{live, 18:49, Atalanta vs. Roma team news}

{live, 18:48, Salernitana counter}

Tchaouna sprints on the counter, goes down under a Gatti shove, but not enough for a penalty.

{live, 18:44, Save on Milik!}

{live, 18:41, Juve subs}

Milik and Yildiz on, Vlahovic and Rugani off.

{live, 18:37, Salernitana sub}

Kastanos on, Ikwuemesi off. A former Juve youth team player.

{live, 18:37, Juve chance}

Cambiaso cross floated across the face of goal, Vlahovic and Bremer flying in can’t connect.

{live, 18:35, Oh dear}

Fazio charges down Chiesa strike, then Locatelli effort deflected, on the resulting corner Chiesa curler through a sea of bodies flashes inches wide!

{live, 18:26, Huge Juve chance!}

Chiesa cross-shot is low, Pierozzi comes flying in to clear, it hits Rugani and goes wide! Could’ve gone anywhere.

{live, 18:24, Vlahovic so close!}

End to end! Tchaouna counters from a Juve corner, Coulibaly gets into a tangle, loses it, Chiesa then sparks the counter-counter, sends Vlahovic through and angled drive SKIMS the far post!

{live, 18:22, Juve push}

Chiesa weak finish charged down, then Locatelli and Vignato both go with high foot for the loose ball and referee is right there, waves play on.

{live, 18:20, Fazio over}

Salernitana free kick, Fazio header loops up and onto the roof of the net.

{live, 18:17, Oh….}

VAR had a check for a possible penalty, Rabiot handball on the corner. Looks like it was decided that his arm was in a natural enough position to avoid a spot-kick.

{live, 18:15, Salernitana corner}

Sambia for Pierozzi header, just like the goal, but this time blocked.

{live, 18:11, Juve effort}

{live, 17:51, Kostic wide}

Juve corner taken short, Kostic drills wide of the near post.

{live, 17:46, Juve chance}

Cambiaso left-foot curler flashes just wide from the edge of the area. In fact, that might’ve just clipped the upright!

{live, 17:43, Sambia lively}

Sambia down the left, shrugs off McKennie, shot blocked by Gatti.

{live, 17:41, Kean goes down}

Too weak with Pierozzi behind him, went down as soon as he felt a hand. Ref not falling for it.

{live, 17:39, Huge Salernitana chance!}

Penalty appeals rejected, Szczesny ran a huge risk going one on one to push the ball off the feet of Ikwuemesi after great work from Tchaouna!

{live, 17:37, Bremer!}

The crowd wonder where Bremer is going surging forward, then why he just hit it from 25 metres out, then hold their breath as it flashes just wide!

{live, 17:34, Szczesny save!}

Almost 2-0 for Salernitana, Sambia free kick dips and Szczesny flies to palm it out of the near top corner!

{live, 17:33, Juve frayed}

Gatti shove on Ikwuemesi, then the defender reacts angrily to the referee awarding a free kick.

{live, 17:29, Juventus 0-1 Salernitana: Niccolo’ Pierozzi!}

That is some bad defending! Pierozzi totally unmarked for a powerful free header from six yards on the Sambia corner, it squirms past Szczesny at the near post!

{live, 17:28, Rabiot booked}

Another Juventus player carded, again for a foul on Coulibaly, this one much clearer as he was considerably late.

{live, 17:25, Vlahovic booked}

Vlahovic is stunned he has gone into the book for being late on Coulibaly. It was more of a collision than anything else.

{live, 17:23, Offside flag up}

Not terribly convinced McKennie was offside…

{live, 17:19, Juve attempt}

Juventus corner, Rabiot tries an acrobatic volley, but slips. Bremer then prevents a Salernitana counter.

{live, 17:13, Few problems}

Allegri furious with his defenders after a Salernitana attack, meanwhile the referee needs the audio equipment changed to communicate with the VAR. Might just be drenched by the ridiculous rain. Even the Juve subs are hiding.

{live, 17:11, Vlahovic off the crossbar!}

Scorcher from distance and Fiorillo has to fingertip that onto the crossbar!

{live, 17:09, Salernitana again}

Pierozzi snapshot, but straight at Szczesny.

{live, 17:05, Oh dear}

That’s not just heavy rain, that’s thunder over Turin…

{live, 17:04, Bremer decisive}

Good chance for Salernitana, Vignato surged off on the counter, Bremer had to cut across and steal it.

{live, 16:40, Juventus ultras protesting}

Juve ultras released a very long and long-winded statement on a flyer saying their season ‘ends here’ and they’ll sit in silence for the final home game. Again, they are protesting against the club hierarchy.

{live, 15:43, Verona 1-2 Torino: Pietro Pellegri!}

How did that go in? Hard to get a tighter angle than that from Pellegrini down the right, his finish went through the legs of Montipo’, bounced off the inside of the far post and back into the net!

{live, 15:41, Torino again}

Pellegri can’t get the header on target from a Linetty cross.

{live, 15:40, Save on Ricci}

{live, 15:29, Genoa 2-1 Sassuolo: Marash Kumbulla og!}

Turnaround! Counter-attack from Genoa’s own penalty area, Gudmundsson surged forward, spread to Ekuban, roll across goes beyond Retegui, but bounces in off Kumbulla!

{live, 15:27, Verona 1-0 Torino: Karol Swiderski!}

Oh Tameze… It was a Torino throw-in, Tameze for some reason threw it straight at a Verona player and it was pulled back from the by-line by Serdar for Swiderski to tap in!

{live, 15:27, Badelj goal}

{live, 15:25, Verona chance}

A good quick passing move, Noslin pulls back for Suslov, who scuffs the finish horribly wide from 12 yards!

{live, 15:21, Genoa 1-1 Sassuolo: Milan Badelj!}

Martin corner flicked on by Thorsby and nobody was marking Badelj for the free header at the back post!

Gudmundsson goes down after crossing paths with Obiang, but no penalty.

{live, 14:37, Sassuolo chance}

Martinez gets across to palm a Lauriente free kick round the near post. On the resulting corner, Thorstvedt header again at the goalkeeper.

{live, 14:36, Verona risk own goal}

Coppola header goes just wide anticipating Sanabria on the Tameze cross, that was risky.

{live, 14:33, Genoa 0-1 Sassuolo: Andrea Pinamonti penalty!}

Sent Martinez the wrong way to sweep into the near bottom corner.

{live, 14:31, Penalty for Sassuolo!}

Turns out it wasn’t just the turf, De Winter trod on the back of Lauriente’s boot!

{live, 14:30, Oh dear}

Lauriente’ on the counter for Sassuolo, goes down in the box, but it’s because he kicked the turf.

{live, 14:26, Verona chance}

Phew! Noslin free header, but very central and plucked out of the air by VMS.

There was a handball in there somewhere…

{live, 14:08, Genoa 1-0 Sassuolo: Morten Thorsby}

Bit of a chaotic goal, to be kind to Sassuolo… Let’s just call that a total disaster. Martin cross flapped at horribly by the goalkeeper, then Matheus Henrique for reasons known only to himself deflects it back towards the goal, turning into an assist for the Thorsby header.

{live, 12:18, Empoli again}

Caputo robs Lazzari on the edge of the area, but Maleh fires over. The crowd jeers in irritation.

{live, 12:15, Calm down, Patric}

{live, 12:00, Empoli chance}

Oh they should’ve done better there! Empoli corner, Ismajli fairly free diving header over the bar!

{live, 11:57, Immobile chance}

Serie A | Genoa 2-1 Sassuolo: Neroverdi crumble at Marassi https://football-italia.net/serie-a-genoa-2-1-sassuolo-neroverdi-crumble/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-genoa-2-1-sassuolo-neroverdi-crumble/#respond Sun, 12 May 2024 15:06:15 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=807510

Sassuolo fumbled the lead for an unlucky 2-1 defeat away to Genoa that leaves them verging on relegation to Serie B.

The Grifone welcomed Albert Gudmundsson back after flu symptoms, but still missed Vitinha, Mattia Bani, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Junior Messias and Alan Matturro. Sassuolo gave themselves hope of staying up with a shock 1-0 win over Inter, though Gregoire Defrel, Samu Castillejo and Domenico Berardi were still sidelined.

The teams wore special edition jerseys with their maternal surnames on the back, in honour of Mother’s Day.

See how the game unfolded on the Liveblog.

Genoa had the ball in the net early on after some truly chaotic defending, as Andrea Consigli flapped at the Aaron Martin cross, Matheus Henrique’s clearance somehow went back towards goal rather than away from it, turning into an assist for the Morten Thorsby header. However, it was disallowed by VAR due to a handling offence.

Armand Lauriente went down in the box after Koni De Winter trod on the back of his foot, taking the boot off, so Andrea Pinamonti converted the resulting penalty to give Sassuolo the lead.

Lauriente’s free kick was palmed round the post, then his first touch let him down, unable to make the most of a Johan Vasquez slip on the Josh Doig cross.

Gudmundsson also had penalty appeals rejected as he crossed paths with Pedro Obiang and they collided.

Genoa equalised from a set play, as Thorsby flicked on the Martin corner and Milan Badelj was left unmarked to nod in at the back post.

The hosts turned it around with a classic counter-attack that started in their own penalty area, Gudmundsson spreading to Caleb Ekuban, the roll across beyond Retegui, but bouncing in by accident off Marash Kumbulla’s shin.

Five Serie A matches are set to take place this Sunday, including Lazio’s visit from Empoli and Juventus’ hosting of Salernitana, which could mathematically secure a spot in the 2024-25 Champions League for Max Allegri’s side.

Lazio and Empoli are up first, kicking off at 11.30 BST. Luis Alberto is expected to be left out of the starting line-up for tactical reasons.

The Biancocelesti could instead line up with a midfield pairing of Matteo Guendouzi and Daichi Kamada, with Mattia Zaccagni and Felipe Anderson on the flanks in support of centre-forward Ciro Immobile.

Genoa have a fully fit and available squad ready to face Sassuolo, who themselves are without Domenico Berardi, Samu Castillejo and Gregoire Defrel.

Ivan Juric is not expected to make too many alterations to his Torino side when they face Hellas Verona.

Reports over the weekend suggest that Allegri could make several changes to his side ahead of Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final against Atalanta

Several players, including the likes of Adrien Rabiot, captain Danilo and leading goalscorer Dusan Vlahovic, could be afforded a rest, according to updates from Gianluca Di Marzio.

That means that Southampton loanee Carlos Alcaraz could be given a go in midfield, Samuel Iling-Junior could feature, and Arkadiusz Milik is in line for a run-out.

Milan and others mark Mother’s Day with name change https://football-italia.net/milan-mark-mothers-day-with-name-change/ https://football-italia.net/milan-mark-mothers-day-with-name-change/#respond Fri, 10 May 2024 17:13:59 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=806850

Serie A clubs Milan, Cagliari, Genoa, Lecce, Torino, Verona and Udinese will celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend by changing the player names on their shirts.

The initiative will see the jerseys switch from their father’s surname to represent that of their mothers instead.

For example, Milan stars Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud will have ‘Conceicao’ and ‘Viviane’ on the back of their shirts.

It is not just for Mother’s Day, as it also marks the anniversary of a change in the Italian law decided by the Constitutional Court in April 2022.

It was considered unconstitutional that a child is automatically given the father’s surname in official papers, so both parents had to agree on the surname given at birth.

Milan lead Mother’s Day initiative

“We are happy and proud of this initiative, born on a special occasion like Mother’s Day to raise public awareness about the equal right to choose the surname of one’s children,” said Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani.

“We are equally pleased with the attention and enthusiasm with which it has been welcomed by Lega Serie A and the participation of several other clubs in our league. An operation in line with AC Milan’s vision, which has always promoted positive values, such as social and gender equality, to contribute to a common and shared cultural change.”

Other Serie A clubs had also hoped to be part of the project, but according to Sky Sport Italia, it was only announced so late by the Lega Serie A that they did not have time to organise it.

Some have already pointed out the curious sight of Leao in a Conceicao jersey when Milan are trying to secure Sergio Conceicao as their new coach.

Serie A transfer round-up: Inter, Napoli boost, Tottenham blow for Gudmundsson, plus Greenwood, Koopmeiners updates https://football-italia.net/serie-a-transfer-round-up-gudmindsson-boosts/ https://football-italia.net/serie-a-transfer-round-up-gudmindsson-boosts/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 18:49:55 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=806139

Check out today’s latest transfer updates from Serie A, including Inter and Napoli’s boost in their pursuit of Genoa’s Albert Gudmundsson, which comes as a blow for Premier League side Tottenham, as well as the latest updates on Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, Juventus target Mason Greenwood and star Milan full-back Theo Hernandez.

Gudmundsson has recently revealed that his preference would be to stay in Italy, amidst speculation linking him to a number of clubs in Serie A and the Premier League.

That comes as a positive sign for Inter and recently-linked Napoli, but it makes life significantly tougher for Ange Postecoglu’s Spurs, who have reportedly been interested in the Iceland international for several months.

More Serie A transfer updates

It is a similar situation for Atalanta creator Koopmeiners, who would ideally like to stay in Serie A beyond the 2023-24 season, according to Matteo Moretto

The Netherlands international has admirers in Liverpool, as well as in Turin, from Juventus specifically. La Dea are in no rush to sell, are relatively stable financially speaking, so interested clubs will likely have to fork out a significant fee for the 26-year-old, who still has just over three years remaining on his current contract.

Getafe President Ángel Torres has claimed that Barcelona are the only Spanish side interested in Juventus target and Manchester United-owned forward Mason Greenwood.

Fabrizio Romano, however, claims that the Catalan club have ruled out a move for the one-time England international, while La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that the controversial Englishman is still a priority for Juventus ahead of next season.

Meanwhile in Milan, Theo Hernandez is set to meet with Rossoneri representatives to discuss his future position with the club amidst reports of interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The France international has a contract in San Siro until 2026, and recent reports suggested that he has been keen to extend his stay with Milan.

777 Partners: Everton shareholders plead for swift end to negotiations with Genoa owners https://football-italia.net/everton-sa-urge-end-of-777-partners-talks/ https://football-italia.net/everton-sa-urge-end-of-777-partners-talks/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 17:42:52 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=806131

The Everton Shareholders’ Association have urged the club to end negotiations with Genoa owners 777 Partners as swiftly as possible, with the organisation adding that they have been left ‘dismayed by the lack of respect’ shown to the Merseyside club since talks began back in September.

For well over six months now, 777 partners have been in negotiations to take over the 94.1% controlling state currently owned by Farhad Moshiri.

The Miami-based private investment firm, who have stakes in Hertha Berlin, Standard Liege, Red Star and Vasco da Gama, have also reportedly been funding Everton with loans of up to €200m in order to continue works on their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Everton Shareholders’ Association comments

“We are the oldest Shareholders’ Association in the world and are dismayed by the lack of respect being shown to our football club by the largest shareholder Farhad Moshiri and the Premier League during what seems a never-ending change of ownership process,” the ESA wrote in a statement.

“We have observed with concern and frustration as it became increasingly clear that a fit-for-purpose process cannot possibly take his long as the Premier League continues to demonstrate their inability to regulate.

“In the absence of the Premier League making a timely decision, we insist that the Everton board, and Farhad Moshiri in particular, stop this damaging process now and recognise that 777 Partners are not at this time fit-and-proper prospective owners of Everton Football Club.

“The powers-that-be are being disrespectful to our fellow shareholders, our fantastic worldwide fanbase and football as a whole by continuing to allow this face to continue. We demand and decision and we demand it now.”

777 Partners background

777 Partners’ ownership of Genoa has not been a major cause for concern, as they were promoted back to Serie A in 2022-23 and have just secured their spot in the top flight for 2024-25 as well.

However, there have been concerns in other areas of 777 Partners’ portfolio.

Less than a week ago, the New York Times reported that the firm had a lawsuit brought against them in a United States federal court. The suit claims that 777 Partners had double-pledged assets, or used assets that didn’t actually exist, to secure loans in the region of $600m.

Inter and Napoli boost as Tottenham target Gudmundsson reveals his transfer stance https://football-italia.net/inter-napoli-gudmundsson-transfer-stance/ https://football-italia.net/inter-napoli-gudmundsson-transfer-stance/#comments Tue, 07 May 2024 16:36:00 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=806101

Albert Gudmundsson admits he is ‘not eager’ to move out of Italy as he likes ‘football and life’ in the country so he must be offered ‘something good’ to leave the Peninsula and Genoa.

Gudmundsson is one of Serie A’s best players this season, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions with Genoa. His impressive performances in his first-ever season in Italy’s top flight have attracted interest from several top clubs, including Inter, Napoli, and Tottenham.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto reported on Tuesday that Napoli also entered the race for the Iceland international.

Inter and Napoli boost as Tottenham target Gudmundsson reveals his transfer stance

Speaking to CBS Sports about his future, Gudmundsson said: “When I was a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Premier League, but since I moved to Italy, it has changed a little bit because I really like the country, the league, and I like the football and life.

“I am not eager to move out of Italy, to be honest. If I have to leave the country and this club it has to be something good because I really feel good here.”

The 26-year-old has recently signed a contract extension until June 2027 at Marassi.

He moved to Genoa for just €1.5m from AZ Alkmaar in the 2022 January transfer window and his price tag has skyrocketed since. Multiple reports in Italy claim Genoa won’t sell the Iceland striker for less than €40m next summer.

Gudmundsson: Napoli enter race for Tottenham and Inter target https://football-italia.net/gudmundsson-napoli-race-tottenham-inter/ https://football-italia.net/gudmundsson-napoli-race-tottenham-inter/#respond Tue, 07 May 2024 10:02:19 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=806027

Napoli have decisively entered the race with Inter, Juventus and Tottenham for Genoa ace Albert Gudmundsson, reports detail.

The 26-year-old Icelandic forward seems destined for the jump to a top club in the summer after his impressive season under Alberto Gilardino in Liguria, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Gudmundsson has attracted serious attention from Inter, Juventus and Tottenham, with the latter possibly holding a slight edge due to the Genoa forward’s desire to play in the Premier League one day, something he recently admitted to The Telegraph.

Gudmundsson race grows

As reported by Daniele Longo and Relevo, Napoli have decided to decisively enter the race for Gudmundsson and could send in an official offer to Genoa in the coming days, wanting to beat Inter, Juventus and Tottenham to the Icelandic forward.

The Ligurian outfit are open to letting him leave in the summer and want at least €35m for the 26-year-old, who feels ready to make the step up in his career.

Clashes between Genoa and Sampdoria fans escalate https://football-italia.net/clashes-between-genoa-sampdoria-fans-escalate/ https://football-italia.net/clashes-between-genoa-sampdoria-fans-escalate/#comments Mon, 06 May 2024 16:41:14 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=805859

Police are concerned after battles broke out in the city streets between rival Genoa and Sampdoria ultras.

The situation surprisingly erupted on Sunday night following Sampdoria’s Serie B victory over Reggiana at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, also known commonly as Marassi.

There were reports of bottles and chairs being thrown in Piazza Alimonda, when Samp supporters crossed paths with Genoa fans watching their Serie A match against Milan on television in a bar.

Police managed to intervene, but this evidently sparked a desire for revenge and lit a fire under the city, as there were more violent clashes on Monday afternoon.

The authorities were called after two Genoa fans were ambushed by four Sampdoria ultras, with one stabbed in the arm.

The rivalry between Genoa and Sampdoria has always been tense, but the worst of it was avoided this year because they are in two different divisions, so have not faced each other in the Derby della Lanterna.

This is therefore seen as a worrying escalation in the city of Genoa and it is not clear what started it, but they fear it could spread rapidly.

Milan vs Genoa reactions: Mixed Pioli ratings, Leao decision, Pulisic and problems https://football-italia.net/pioli-leao-pulisic-milan-genoa-ratings-papers/ https://football-italia.net/pioli-leao-pulisic-milan-genoa-ratings-papers/#comments Mon, 06 May 2024 09:13:24 +0000 https://football-italia.net/?p=805781

Italian sports papers offered different views on Stefano Pioli but agreed that Christian Pulisic was among the best players for the Rossoneri against Genoa: ‘Others were the problem,’ wrote Gazzetta.

Monday’s sports newspapers in Italy analysed Milan’s 3-3 draw against Genoa on Sunday.

USMNT captain Pulisic provided an assist for Olivier Giroud in the second half and received the highest ratings among Milan players, alongside Samuel Chukwueze.

“A shot on target, an excellent assist for Giroud and consistency, always making the right movements. Others were the problem,” wrote the pink paper.

It’s not difficult to guess who Gazzetta referred to with the “others,” given that four players, including Fikayo Tomori and Rafael Leao, were rated below 6/10 by the pink paper.

The Portuguese star was rated 5/10 and was booed when Pioli subbed him off. “It’s time for decisions,” wrote Gazzetta. “Does Leao feel he can start again from Milan, or would a fresh start suit him more?”

Nevertheless, Tomori received the lowest ratings against Genoa as the English defender made errors in “key moments,” noted Gazzetta, including causing an early penalty kick for Genoa, converted by Italy international Mateo Retegui.

Last but not least, Gazzetta did rate Pioli 5.5, but journalist Fabio Licari highlighted that the Parma-born coach “would not deserve to be sacked given what he has done over the last few years.” However “it is sometimes necessary to start from scratch, but he won’t be the only one leaving.”

On the other hand, Corriere dello Sport, on page nine, blamed Pioli, saying that Milan had the wrong approach and were once again weak defensively, conceding three times against Genoa despite switching to a three-man defence” in the final minutes.
